Dr. Kokahvah “Mama Koko” Zaditu-Selassie to Deliver 2024 Keynote

The ADRSA is excited to announce Dr. Kokahvah “Mama Koko” Zaditu-Selassie as the keynote speaker for our 2024 conference entitled “The Power of Place: Home, ‘Foreign,” and Belonging in Africana Religions to be held at The City College of New York on April 19, 2024. Mama Koko has been a longtime member of the ADRSA and has previously served as a panelist and opening plenary speaker. We are honored to have her deliver this year’s keynote entitled “I Got a Home in Dat Rock: Belief, Belonging, and Sacred Moorings in the African World.”

Mama Koko is an initiated priestess of Obatala in the Lukumi Yoruba tradition and a descendant of a matrilineal group of Hoodoo believers from New Orleans, Louisiana. She is A retired Professor of English at Coppin State University, a traveler, jewelry crafter, and author of three books: the award-winning book of literary criticism, African Spiritual Traditions in the Novels of Toni Morrison, The Second Line, a novel, and the travelogue Caravan: The Amazing Adventures of a Negro Girl From Compton (forthcoming). A sought-after speaker and adept keeper of Mother wit and wisdom, she appeared in the documentary “In Our Mothers’ Gardens” and she has been featured in media outlets including Essence Magazine.
