
18 Mar Dr. Yolanda Covington-Ward to Deliver 2023 Opening Plenary

We are pleased to announce Dr. Yolanda Covington-Ward as our Opening Plenary speaker for ADRSA 2023!
Dr. Yolanda Covington-Ward is Department Chair and an Associate Professor of Africana Studies, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is also an affiliated faculty member in the Global Studies Center, the African Studies Program, and the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Programs at the University of Pittsburgh.
Born and raised in the South Bronx, NY and the first in her family to attend college, Dr. Covington-Ward graduated from Brown with honors with a BA in Afro-American Studies and went on to earn her MA and PhD in Anthropology at the University of Michigan.
Her research places the body at the center of human experience, and focuses on the dynamic multidirectional relationship between physical bodies and group identity. She is the author of Power Gestures: Everyday Performance in Congo (Duke University Press, 2016) and the editor (with Jeanette S. Jouili) of Embodying Black Religions in Africa and its Diasporas (Duke University Press, 2021), amongst other publications.
