Educational Essays and Artwork Wanted!

Educational Essays and Artwork Wanted!

The African and Diaspora Religious Studies Association, in collaboration with the Race, Justice and Africana Religions project*, is calling for contributions for a new website on Africana religions. This website will be an educational platform developed by scholar-practitioners where the public can find accurate information about these often-maligned religions.

We are seeking:

1) Essays that will serve as the main entries describing each African Indigenous (Akan, Ndebele, Yorùbá, Kongo, Fon, Dagara, Eedyi, Igbo, Shona, etc.) or African Diasporic (Vodou, Lukumí, Revival Zion, Candomblé, Kumina, Ifá-Orisa, Shango Baptist, Hoodoo, etc.) religion. Each essay submission should provide an overview of ONE African or African Diaspora religion. Essays must be 2000 words or less and should be written at approximately a high school level of English.

2) Visual artwork that will illustrate the main pages of the website, such as the homepage, the site header, and the main entries on each religion. Artwork may represent a single religion, multiple religions, or Africana religions generally. We welcome photos, drawings, paintings, and any other artwork that can be displayed as a digital image or a short (less than 10 second) video.

The deadline for submission is March 31, 2024. We especially welcome submissions from graduate students, junior scholars, and devotees of Africana religions.

Contributors will be selected based on a blind review of submissions. Selections will be announced during the ADRSA conference in New York City on April 19, 2024. Selected contributors will receive a certificate of recognition and a $100 visa gift card.

Questions may be directed to Dr. Danielle Boaz at dboaz@charlotte.edu
